Fractures | Celebration Orthopaedics

A bone fracture is a break or crack in a bone. It can occur due to trauma, such as a fall, accident, or impact, or due to conditions that weaken the bone, like osteoporosis. There are several types of bone fractures, ranging from small cracks to complete breaks. Some common types include:

  1. Simple (Closed) Fracture: The bone breaks but does not pierce the skin.
  2. Compound (Open) Fracture: The bone breaks and protrudes through the skin, increasing the risk of infection.
  3. Comminuted Fracture: The bone shatters into several pieces.
  4. Greenstick Fracture: A partial fracture that occurs in children, where the bone bends and cracks but doesn’t break completely.
  5. Hairline Fracture: A thin crack in the bone, often harder to detect on initial X-rays.
  6. Transverse Fracture: The bone breaks in a straight line across the bone.
  7. Oblique Fracture: The break occurs at an angle.

Fractures can also be classified based on the location of the injury or the mechanism of the break (e.g., stress fractures, which are often caused by repetitive force).

Treatment typically involves immobilization (e.g., with a cast or splint), and in more severe cases, surgery might be necessary to realign the bone or fix it with pins, plates, or screws. Healing times vary, depending on the type and location of the fracture, as well as the age and overall health of the individual.
